Travel to Greenland for the 2026 Total Solar Eclipse
Why travel to Greenland for the 2026 total solar eclipse?
A rare celestial event in one of the world’s most remote landscapes.
In August 2026, Kiwi travellers will have the rare opportunity to witness one of the most extraordinary natural events of our lifetime - the longest total solar eclipse of the century, unfolding across the remote wilderness of Greenland. For those seeking once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, this is more than a celestial event - it’s an invitation to explore one of the planet’s last true frontiers.
From towering glaciers and iceberg-filled fjords to ancient Inuit culture and Arctic wildlife, travel to Greenland and experience natural wonders unlike anywhere else on Earth. Witness a total solar eclipse, viewed from the deck of a luxury expedition ship, and have a journey that redefines adventure travel.
Why Greenland is the best place to see the 2026 total solar eclipse.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the Earth and the sun, briefly turning day into night. While partial eclipses are relatively common, total solar eclipses visible for several minutes are exceptionally rare - and the 2026 event will be the longest this century.
Greenland sits directly within the eclipse’s path of totality, making it one of the best places in the world to experience the phenomenon. Its vast, open landscapes, minimal light pollution and clear Arctic skies offer ideal viewing conditions, far removed from crowds and urban interference.
Viewing the eclipse from an expedition cruise adds another dimension. At sea, ships can adjust position for optimal visibility, increasing the chance of clear skies. Onboard scientists and astronomy experts guide guests through the science and significance of the eclipse, transforming the event into an immersive learning experience.
What makes travel to Greenland so unique?
For many Kiwi's, Greenland feels impossibly remote - and that’s exactly its appeal. Covering more than two million square kilometres, Greenland is the world’s largest island, yet home to fewer than 60,000 people. Nature dominates here, from ice caps that shape global climate systems to fjords carved over millennia.
Highlights of a Greenland expedition.
When you travel to Greenland on a luxury expedition cruise, the eclipse is only part of the story. Between celestial moments, your days are filled with breathtaking Arctic experiences:
- Sailing through icy fjords framed by towering cliffs and massive glaciers
- Exploring remote Inuit villages, where traditional hunting and fishing practices continue today
- Kayaking among icebergs, seals and seabirds in pristine Arctic waters
- Wildlife spotting, including polar bears, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and whales
- Zodiac (small inflatable boat) landings that allow close-up exploration of untouched coastlines
Each day brings something new, shaped by weather, ice conditions and wildlife encounters — a true expedition in every sense.
Luxury expedition cruising: comfort at the edge of the world.
Greenland may be wild, but your journey doesn’t have to be rugged. Modern expedition ships combine five-star comfort with cutting-edge exploration technology, making them ideal for travellers who want adventure without sacrificing quality.
Onboard, you can expect:
- Spacious ocean-view cabins or suites
- Fine dining inspired by Nordic and international cuisine
- Observation decks and lounges for panoramic viewing
- Expert-led lectures on Arctic ecology, astronomy and culture
- Small guest numbers for a more intimate, personalised experience
For New Zealand travellers, this style of travel offers a seamless way to reach and explore Greenland, with flights and transfers coordinated as part of a carefully curated itinerary.
The science behind the eclipse: a front-row seat to the cosmos.
One of the most compelling aspects of this journey is the opportunity to learn directly from onboard scientists and astronomers. As the moon slowly obscures the sun, experts explain the mechanics of the eclipse, its impact on Earth’s atmosphere and why events like this continue to captivate us.
During a total solar eclipse, temperatures drop, winds shift and wildlife behaviour can change - subtle reminders of our planet’s connection to the cosmos. For many travellers, witnessing these moments firsthand is profoundly moving, offering perspective rarely found in everyday life.
Best time to travel to Greenland.
The Arctic summer, from June to August, is the best time to travel to Greenland. During this period, temperatures are milder, sea ice retreats enough for ship navigation and wildlife activity peaks.
August 2026 is particularly special, combining:
- Optimal conditions for expedition cruising
- Extended daylight hours
- The total solar eclipse - a once-in-a-century event
Because Greenland has a short travel season and limited visitor capacity, early planning is essential, especially for eclipse departures.
Is Greenland suitable for Kiwi Travellers?
Absolutely. While Greenland feels remote, it is increasingly accessible for travellers from New Zealand through Europe or North America. Expedition cruise packages are designed to simplify logistics, making the journey smooth from departure to return.
Greenland appeals particularly to:
- Experienced travellers seeking something truly different
- Nature and wildlife lovers
- Photography enthusiasts
- Science and astronomy fans
- Couples and solo travellers looking for meaningful, immersive journeys
If you’ve already explored destinations like Antarctica, Alaska or the Norwegian Arctic, Greenland offers a fresh and equally awe-inspiring perspective.

From the first travel I did as a teenager I have wanted to travel the world, experience the food, absorb the culture and learn the history!!!
I have always been passionate about creating the ultimate holidays and feel that makes me the best planner of your holidays that I can be!!
I had been selling travel for over 20 years when I felt something else was needed and to the leap to be the retail manger of House of Travel Papamoa. I feel I have never looked back and enjoy leading a fantastic group of people!!
I love my job!!! I love the fact that no one holiday is ever the same and also thrive on a challenge of a complex itinerary, round the world flight or something out of the norm.
I think the benefit you get with me is the experience I have had planning and travel and the places I have travelled.
I have travelled extensively and in particular done a lot around New Zealand, Australia, South Pacific Islands, USA and Europe and find that travel opens your mind to another world full of new experiences, new tastes and an appreciation for life in general.
I have a rule that every trip I do I need to pick one unique thing to do on holiday that is un-usual or you would not do on another holiday .... I have been hot air ballooning, have been on a segway tour, have helicoptered out to an island etc.
My Travel Tips
- I am a bit of a IT geek so always travel with an adaptor that has USB ports for my IWatch, iPhone and iPad.
